If you have seen strands of colorful beads worn by practitioners of Lucumí or Regla de Ocha and wondered what they mean, you are looking at elekes — one of the most recognized expressions of devotion to the Orishas in the tradition.

What Are Elekes?

Elekes (also spelled ileke or collares in Spanish) are sacred beaded necklaces worn by practitioners of Regla de Ocha/Lucumí, commonly known as Santeria. Each necklace is dedicated to a specific Orisha and is strung in the colors and patterns associated with that Orisha's energy and nature.

Elekes are not merely decorative. They are spiritual items that represent a devotee's relationship with a particular Orisha. They are crafted by experienced practitioners using traditional materials and specific bead patterns passed down through generations of the tradition.

Important note: Santeria Guide does not sell consecrated items. The elekes and Ildes we offer are handcrafted ritual-quality pieces made by devotees using authentic traditional materials, ready to be worked with according to your own path and lineage.

The Five Primary Elekes

When a practitioner receives their elekes in a ceremony, they typically receive five necklaces, each tied to a foundational Orisha:

Orisha

Primary Colors

What They Represent

Elegua

Red and black

The messenger, opener of roads and crossroads

Obatala

White

Clarity, wisdom, and the purity of creation

Yemaya

Blue and crystal

The ocean, motherhood, and protective nurturing energy

Oshun

Yellow and amber

Rivers, love, abundance, and sweetness

Chango

Red and white

Strength, justice, and the power of thunder

These five Orishas are considered foundational in the Lucumí tradition, and receiving their elekes marks a significant step on a devotee's spiritual path.

What Is an Ilde?

An Ilde (also spelled idé) is a beaded bracelet worn on the wrist, similarly dedicated to a specific Orisha. Like elekes, Ildes are strung in the colors associated with their Orisha and are worn as a sign of spiritual connection and devotion.

Ildes are among the most personal pieces of spiritual jewelry a practitioner can wear. They sit close to the pulse point and serve as a constant physical reminder of one's relationship with their Orisha.

Bead Colors and Their Orisha Associations

The colors in Orisha bead work are precise and intentional. Here is a quick reference for some of the most common:

  • White — Obatala: purity, peace, and wisdom

  • Yellow / Gold — Oshun: love, rivers, and prosperity

  • Blue / Crystal — Yemaya: the ocean and maternal protection

  • Red / Black — Elegua: crossroads, beginnings, and protection

  • Red / White — Chango: strength and justice

  • Purple / Black — Babalu Aye: healing and the earth

  • Green / Black — Ogun: iron, labor, and the forest

  • Yellow / Green — Orula: divination and wisdom of Ifa

  • Pink / Yellow — Oshun (alternate pattern): sweetness and love

Lineages and houses (ilé) may have variations in their bead patterns, so the patterns above are general guides rather than universal rules.

Caring for Your Orisha Beads

Beaded spiritual jewelry requires mindful care to preserve both its physical integrity and its spiritual significance:

  1. Keep them dry. Avoid submerging elekes or Ildes in water unless your tradition specifically calls for it in a ceremony.

  2. Store them thoughtfully. When not in use, store your beads in a clean, dry space — ideally wrapped in white cloth or placed in a dedicated vessel.

  3. Handle with clean hands. Always wash your hands before handling your beads, and avoid wearing them in spaces or situations that conflict with the Orisha's nature.

  4. Resting periods. Many practitioners remove their elekes at night or during certain activities. Follow the guidance of your godparent or elder in your lineage.

  5. Inspect the stringing. Over time, the thread or cord used to string beads can weaken. Check periodically for fraying and have them re-strung by someone knowledgeable in the tradition before they break.
